Artist Statement
My art weaves together elements of fantasy, reality, and the
subconscious mind seeking to create a visual language that reflects
richness and complexity. I enjoy using multiple mediums from painting to drawing to video to writing. I’m passionate about art as a powerful
language for telling stories and communicating ideas and emotions. I seek to explore questions and topics that interest me, from the meaning of dreams to how we (as humans) treat farm animals to the existence (or lack thereof) of free will. I am drawn to the interplay between illusion and reality, and how our perception of the world shapes our experience of it. My art is an exploration of the world of the unconscious, the emotional, the intellectual, and the whimsical. Im interested in illustrations like the
unsettling ones of Dave McKean and the fanciful ones of Ida Outhwaite. I
love the materiality of paintings by expressionists like Chaïm Soutine and
the dream-like quality of surrealists like Marc Chagall. In my art, I seek to create a sense of magic and mystery, using intuitive and spontaneous brush strokes, vivid colors, and eternal archetypes and symbolism to transport the viewer to a world that is both familiar and strange.
